The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is dedicated to improving the health and wellness of children by raising and granting philanthropic resources. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service and is and governed by a volunteer board of directors composed of community leaders, financial experts and committed philanthropists.

In 2013, the Foundation supported more than 170 pediatric research, medical education, and pediatric community health and community benefit projects and programs that will make a difference in the lives of children in Southeast Michigan.

Where is the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation located?

Can my gift still support the Children’s Hospital of Michigan?

Gifts to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation can be designated to support charitable programs that benefit children and families in partnership with Children’s Hospital, including pediatric research, medical education, and for child health advocacy, education, and outreach programs. Gifts cannot support direct medical care or medical equipment.

If you prefer to make your gift to a specific program area or research effort you may do so using the gift designation area on our online giving form or by mail using our downloadable donation form. Please give us whatever information you think will help us to direct your gift where you want it to be used. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us.

Is my gift to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation tax-deductible?

Yes. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is recognized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization by the Internal Revenue Service. Whether you give online, by phone, or by mail, we will send a gift acknowledgement letter to the address you provide. This acknowledgment of your gift conforms to Internal Revenue Service requirements for tax purposes.

Can I still donate directly to Children’s Hospital of Michigan?

No. On December 30, 2010 the Detroit Medical Center, including the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, began a new chapter when they were acquired by Vanguard Health Systems, an investor-owned hospital company. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is honored to have been chosen to assume responsibility for preserving the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s charitable legacy, along with the responsibility for supporting the charitable programs in pediatric research, medical education, and child health advocacy conducted by the Hospital.

What happened to the donations that had been made to Children’s Hospital of Michigan in the past?

Philanthropic contributions that were raised and designated for Children’s Hospital of Michigan have been transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. In 2011, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette gave his consent for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation to receive the approximately $90M in restricted charitable gifts and endowments that had been donated to Children’s Hospital since inception. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is committed to effectively administering and stewarding these charitable gifts consistent with donor intent and the needs of children in our community.

How can I conduct an event to support the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation?

Fundraising events have long been an important source of support for Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. Can I make a donation of new or used toys?

An additional way to support the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation is through the donation of toys and games. Donations of toys and games help supplement the activities and entertainment that Child Life Services at Children’s Hospital of Michigan provides for children. Please see the Toys & Games Wish List for ideas about developmentally appropriate toys that are most sought-after by children, and to learn what items we cannot accept.

Scheduling Donation Deliveries

  • For larger donations, please contact the Foundation at (313) 745-5373 to schedule your donation delivery. We accept donations at 3901 Beaubien, Detroit, MI 48201.
  • Call us when you are nearby. We will be able to greet you in the drive in front of our building to help unload gifts from your vehicle and onto our carts.
  • Please place items in boxes and bags so that they can be transported easily from your vehicle.
  • Please do not gift-wrap your items.
  • And please remember that all donations must be brand new and in their original packaging.

May I donate food or toys directly to the patients at the hospital?

We’re sorry, but the Children’s Hospital of Michigan is unable to allow donors to deliver gifts directly to patients due to issues regarding patient confidentiality, infection control and security. Additionally, because many of the patients at Children’s Hospital have special diet requirements, it is not possible to donate food for patients.

Can I make a donation of new or gently used clothing?

Donations of new and gently used clothing are needed to stock the Clothes Closet at Children’s Hospital of Michigan.  The Clothes Closet provides casual clothing, outerwear, and layette items to hospitalized patients and families in need.  Donations of gently used clothing should be in very good condition and freshly washed.  Due to space issues we can accept in-season clothing only.

The Clothes Closet can use:

  • New underwear all sizes from toddler to adult
  • New socks of all sizes from toddler to adult
  • Casual girls’/boys’ clothing from infant through size 16 (pants, jeans and tops)
  • Sweat shirts and sweat pants in all sizes (children’s up to 3XXX adult sizes)
  • Winter jackets and snowsuits, infant buntings, scarves, hats and mittens in all children’s and adult sizes (fall and winter need only)
  • Infant clothing and layette items (bibs, sleepers, undershirts, sweaters, bath towels/washcloths, toys, wipes, diapers and bottles)
  • New blankets and quilts
  • Toiletries in travel sizes (shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, tooth brushes, combs, hair brushes, lotion, etc.)

Can I tour the hospital?

Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation staff would be pleased to show you our offices and public areas of the Hospital. Please call (313) 964-6994 to schedule a visit.

Tours of other selected areas of the Hospital can be arranged upon special request.  The privacy of patients and families, patient confidentiality, infection control and security are considered when scheduling tours.  Children must be 10 years or older.  Please call (313) 964-6994 to arrange a tour.
